Dishwasher not cleaning? Clear the spray arm holes and the filter

A dishwasher cleans by pushing water through small holes in the spray arms. When bits of food or build-up block those holes, or the filter clogs, dishes can come out dirty.

Both are usually quick to check, and you don't need tools for most models.

Before you start

  • Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker, or unplug it if it has a plug.
  • Let the water and the tub cool, and check the bottom for broken glass before you reach in.
  • Lay a towel on the floor in front of the door for drips.

Steps

  1. Empty the dishwasher and pull out the lower rack.
  2. Take off each spray arm. On many models the lower arm lifts straight up, and the middle arm is held by a nut. LG shows the top arm held by clips on its bracket. Your manual shows yours. Keep any small pin or clip.
  3. Rinse each arm under warm water and see which holes are blocked.
  4. Use a toothpick to loosen the build-up in each blocked hole. Tap the arm gently on a flat surface to shake out loose pieces.
  5. Fill each arm with hot water from the sink and shake it. Pour water through to check that the holes are clear.
  6. Take out the filter at the bottom of the tub, following your manual. Wash it with soap and a soft brush under running water, and clear any debris from the spot it came from.
  7. Put the filter and the spray arms back. Spin each arm by hand. It should turn freely.
  8. Check the loading. Leave space between items, and don't let tall pieces block the spray arms. Bosch says to scrape off food but not to pre-rinse, because detergent needs a little food to cling to.
  9. Put the lower rack back, turn the power on and run a short cycle.

When to stop

Stop and call a repair service if any of these happen.

  • A spray arm is cracked, a pin or clip is broken, or an arm won't spin freely after cleaning.
  • You find standing water in the tub that doesn't drain.
  • You see a leak, a damaged cord or wiring, sparks or a burning smell. Leave the power off.
  • Dishes still come out dirty after both parts are clean and the load is spaced out. Stop and call a repair service.
