LG fridge Er FF code? The freezer fan may be iced up. Check these first

Applies to: LG refrigerators. The display may show ER FF or E FF. ER rF is the same problem for the fan in the fridge section.

What the code means

Er FF means the fan motor in the freezer isn't working properly. LG says the usual reason is ice or frost building up around the motor and stopping the fan.

LG says this often happens when the freezer is overfilled, or when a door isn't fully closed and outside air gets in. Er rF is the same problem for the fan in the fridge section, and LG gives the same steps for both.

Before you start

  • Unplug the refrigerator before you defrost it.
  • Don't use a hair dryer to melt the ice. LG says the heat could warp plastic parts or create a fire hazard.

What the manufacturer says to check

  1. Move the food to another fridge or an insulated cooler.
  2. Put dry towels on the floor in front of the fridge.
  3. Unplug the refrigerator and leave both doors fully open for at least twenty-four hours. LG says about a day in summer, and up to three days in winter.
  4. Dry the inside, then plug the refrigerator back in.
  5. Give it twenty-four to forty-eight hours to reach its normal temperature.
  6. Once it is cold again, don't overfill the freezer, and make sure the doors close all the way.

Stop and call for service

Stop and call for service if any of these happen.

  • The code comes back after a full defrost. LG says to contact LG or request a service visit, and notes that fees may apply if the fridge is out of warranty.
